A Mother's Mission: Opening a Cafe to Empower Her Son and Others with Disabilities

In the heart of Cedars, Pennsylvania, one mother's concern for her son's future turned into a beacon of hope for many. Maureen Stanko, driven by her love for her son Nick and a belief in his potential, opened a unique cafe that not only employs individuals with disabilities but also creates a supportive community space.

The Inspiration Behind the Cafe

Maureen Stanko always knew her son, Nick, who is on the autism spectrum, had so much to offer. However, as Nick approached adulthood, Maureen worried about his future. In Pennsylvania, students with disabilities can stay in school until they are 22, but what happens next is often uncertain. This uncertainty kept Maureen awake at night.

One night, inspired by her father's saying, "When you have a problem, pray like hell then get up off your knees and do something," Maureen had a revelation. She shared her concerns with Nick's therapist, Tyler Kammerle, who had a dream of opening a restaurant to employ people with disabilities. With the help of philanthropist Kathy Opperman, their vision came to life.

The Birth of So Much to Give Inclusive Cafe

In January 2023, the So Much to Give Inclusive Cafe opened its doors at 3401 W Skippack Pike, Cedars, PA 19423. The cafe employs 63 people, 80% of whom have disabilities, serving as greeters, food runners, sous chefs, dishwashers, and servers. This inclusive environment offers more than just jobs; it provides a safe space for people with disabilities to dine and socialize.

"We never took Nick to a restaurant before this cafe opened," Maureen shared. "Now we have a place where if he stands up and starts hopping like a bunny or clapping or yelling, nobody cares."

The Impact on Employees and the Community

The cafe has transformed the lives of many, including Lauren Oppelts, who is hearing impaired. Lauren works as a hostess and sign language teacher, and she credits the cafe with boosting her self-confidence and providing her with new opportunities.

Nick, despite his disability and extreme food allergies, has found his place at the cafe. "He set this entire room up without me saying a word," Maureen proudly noted. "The level of pride in him was just incredible."

Beyond the Cafe: The Inspiration Studio

Maureen's vision extended beyond the cafe. Across the street, she opened the Inspiration Studio, where individuals with disabilities can learn music, life skills, crafts, and other classes. This space further empowers people with disabilities, providing them with opportunities for personal growth and social interaction.

The So Much to Give Inclusive Cafe is more than just a restaurant. It's a testament to what can be achieved when compassion, community, and a belief in everyone's potential come together. As Maureen beautifully puts it, "Everybody has so much to give."

Visit the cafe to experience a welcoming and inclusive environment where everyone is valued and empowered.
